Heritage Learning Center and Museum
The Heritage Learning Center Museum is located at 830 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street. The building that houses the museum is believed to be one of the oldest remaining frame residential structures in Indianapolis, the English/McCormick/Gibson/Wilhite home. The front of the house comes from a house built on the Northwest quadrant of Monument Circle by the State of Indiana c. 1827 as additional quarters for the governor. The house was never used for this purpose and was instead purchased by William Hayden English. He continued to live there until the 1880's when he began to use it as his office. The house was slated for demolition in 1993 but was bought by Bernard Brent, Sr. who donated it to Historic Ransom Place for use as a museum. The house was moved from its temporary location in the 1200 block of N. West Street to the 830 N. West Street location in 1993. The museum contains a wealth of information and objects that document the history and heritage of the area's African American residents. The North parlor, the Verniece King Brent Parlor, is named after Brent's late wife. The South parlor is called the Madam Walker Parlor and highlights the Indianapolis years of Madam C.J. Walker. Heritage Learning Center hours are by appointment only. Please call the Learning Center at (317) 632-2340 to schedule a visit.
