Freeman Ransom

The Second Christian Church building was first erected in 1910, but by this time the Church had already received recognition for its dedication to the education of African-American children.  The first church building, built around 1830, was located at 13th and Missouri Streets in Indianapolis.  As the church grew, a new building was needed.  The Mission board of the church began to raise money for the purchase of land for the new church and for building costs.

The site at 702 W. 9th Street was chosen for the new church.  After the church was built, the board continued fundraising for an expansion of the Flanner Guild, a forerunner to the Flanner House.  The Guild cared for the homeless and jobless in the city by offering temporary housing, food, healthcare services, and job training.  The church board completed the purchase of several houses for the expansion at West St. Clair and West Streets in 1917.  The pastor of the church at this time was Rev. Henry Herrod, who served as director of the Flanner House and lived in the neighborhood at 841 1/2 Camp Street.

Upon Herod's passing, Cleo Blackburn became the pastor of the Church and assumed the directorship of Flanner House.  By the 1950's the congregation had grown quite large and the building at 702 W. 9th was no longer adequate.  Soon after, the church, under senior pastor R.H. Peoples, moved to its final location at West 29th Street and Kenwood Avenue.

After the move, the building was purchased by Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church under Rev. K. Nolan Vance.
